From Doctor to Patient

On July 21st Dr. Rex Marco, a world-class surgeon and great humanitarian, went over the handlebars of his bicycle and suffered a broken neck. In an instant, his life changed from doctor to patient. He was rushed to Memorial Herman Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to stabilize his neck. Dr. Marco has recovered the strength to breathe on his own but may never walk or use his arms again. Three months after his injury, his baby boy Kai was born; sadly, he may never hold Kai in his arms.

Before this injury, Dr. Marco was one of a few surgeons worldwide with training and expertise in reconstructive spine surgery and musculoskeletal oncology who performed limb salvage surgery on adult and children with bone tumors. Prior to Dr. Marco coming to Texas Children’s, most children with a bone tumor of the leg or arm had an amputation. Dr. Marco performed surgeries using advanced techniques that allowed children to walk or use their arms with no prosthesis required. He traveled to Haiti to take care of patients after hurricane Matthew devastated the island in 2016, and provided missionary work in Kenya and Guatemala.

People with cervical spinal injuries, like the injury Dr. Marco suffers from, require assistance with the chores of daily living. They need assistance to move from a bed to a wheelchair, they do not have control of their bowel and bladder, they cannot bathe, clean or even feed themselves. Even a doctor with good health insurance ends up with significant expenses that are not covered by insurance.

Dr. Marco is not angry, nor sorry for himself. He is strong and, as always, ready to move forward with his life. We ask that you help raise funds for him by donating to him on this page.
